BIRTH INJURIES

Birth injuries or death can occur during prenatal care or during labor and delivery or during the neonatal period.

During the prenatal period, obstetricians or other medical caregivers can cause damage or death to the mother or fetus by failing to monitor, test and treat the following problems:

1. Blood pressure (hypertension).

2. Elevated blood sugar (diabetes).

3. Excessive weight gain of mother or fetus.

4. Blood compatibility abnormalities.

During labor and delivery, obstetricians or other health caregivers can cause damage or death to the mother or fetus by failing to monitor, test and treat the following problems:

  • Fetal heart rate abnormalities that indicate lack of oxygen to the fetal brain, or the umbilical cord tightly wrapped around the fetal neck.
  • Persistent fetal heart rate abnormalities that require an emergency cesarean section delivery.
  • Failure of the labor to cause the fetus to come to delivery.
  • Development of a shoulder dystocia causing an arrest of labor.
