NEONATAL PERIOD
After the baby is delivered,
there is a critical period during which they must
be assessed for adequate breathing, vital signs,
and organ system functions, such as lungs, heart,
blood, kidneys, liver and digestive tract. They
should be carefully examined by qualified pediatricians
or neonatologist. Damage may occur to any of the
baby's vital organ systems if abnormal findings
are not treated promptly.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery refers
to performing intra-abdominal surgical procedures
through small incisions in the abdomen, rather
than opening up the entire abdomen, which is called
the laparotomy procedure. In laparoscopic procedures,
the surgical device is inserted into a hole, a
small camera lens is inserted into another hole
and the surgery is carried out. The surgeon can
only see what the camera lens reveals and therefore,
surgical errors can occur. An example is gall
bladder removal (cholecystectomy) when damage
to vital vascular structures can occur. If there
is bleeding that obscures the camera lens, the
surgeon must stop the surgery and open up the
abdomen so he can see the surgical field. Accidental
surgical injuries or burns by an electrocautery
device used to cauterize bleeding areas may be
the basis of a medical malpractice claim.
